According to the National Institute of health, "up to 90% of patients with obstructive sleep apnea may go undiagnosed". Signs of sleep apnea that are often missed by your healthcare providers can be: your bed-partner witnessing pauses in breathing, daytime sleepiness or fatigue, restless sleep, night time urination/ or frequent night time urination, night sweats, morning headache, waking up spontaneously in the middle of night for no reason and feeling completely awake, or having rapid heart rate when waking up at night. Waking up with a chocking sensation/ gasping for air, gastric reflux/ heartburn in the middle of night or in the morning, and having brain fog or lack of concentration or feeling unmotivated that can be misinterpreted as depression, having a hard time losing weight, etc. Conditions that are associated with sleep apnea include but are not limited to: obesity, difficulty losing weight, anxiety, heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugars, irregular heart beats, cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, stroke, dementia etc.
